This distinctive sedge is common in damp areas, particularly on riverbanks. It is also known as pendulous, weeping and hanging sedge. Its seeds can be winnowed and ground into flour, but they are small and unlikely to be worth the effort.

The Manx name for this plant is "Shiast chroym", which means "bent sedge".
