This variety of St John's Wort is less common on the island than Slender St John's wort. It is distinguished by its square stalk, leaves in opposite pairs and larger number of individual flowers.

Square-Stalked St. John's Wort prefers damp soil and can be found alongside streams and ditches.

The Manx name for this plant is "Bea-noa firryn", which means (roughly) "Man's new life".
